Are You Ready?

by Craig Martin

Several years ago at the national AAR/SBL meeting, at the end of a session I joined the usual mass exodus to the restrooms. In the restroom I overheard two men excitedly talking about the session they had just left. They both seemed happily excited that something called “the Spirit” had moved, and one of them said, “I know they say this is an academic conference, but that was Church, that was CHURCH!

While he and I would probably differ in our evaluation of such a state of affairs, he was probably right.

  1. Jim Linville says:

When SBL was in Toronto I overheard two odd things. There was some attendee walking around the conference hotel waving his cane and muttering about “God damn atheists! Scum of the Earth”. While going into a session on the Book of the 12, I overheard one rather famous scholar say “Well, I don’t know about that theory, I’m just a simple believer!”

  2. When I went to the House of Blues in Cambridge, Mass., for the Sunday brunch some years ago, the lead singer of the R & B entourage announced “this is church,” after a particularly rousing rendition of “Mustang Sally.”
